Open Letter to Amazon: Launch Reader’s Club Newsletter and Allow Indie Author Submissions

As an author struggling with ways to effectively market my books, I would love for Amazon to develop an offering that would allow us to partner in the promotion of my independently produced eBooks. It would go something like this. Amazon should integrate (add) a Bookbub-like newsletter feature. In broad strokes:

  1. Allow readers/buyers to opt in (sign in) to a newsletter feature, selecting their preferred genres and/or opting in for a “similar to what you’ve bought” choice.
  2. Allow readers to specify how often they want to receive newsletters (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly).
  3. Let authors opt in by say, having to set their books to a minimum price (say, $2.99), get a reduced royalty (20-25%), and set a flexible (up to the author, say, 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks) time period during which they want their book featured in the Amazon newsletter.

This is a win-win:

  1. Authors get more exposure to a huge audience (it has the potential of being far bigger than anything BookBub, et. al. own) without having to fork over cash they can’t spare.
  2. Amazon gets a bigger slice during their promo (which incentivizes them to do a proper promotion); *and* after the promo period, if the book catches on, Amazon gets more sales and revenue.

Perhaps you have considered something like this in the past? I would really love to see it. I’m sure many other independent authors would as well.
